Description
Model History:
The Haut à Courroies (or “HAC”) was the very first travel bag designed by Hermès in the late 19th century to carry riding boots and other bulky items. It was this model that inspired the creation of the Birkin in the 1980s. The version presented here, dated 1982 (letter “L” in a circle), perfectly illustrates the transition between equestrian tradition and modern luxury. Epsom leather, introduced later, gives this version a rigid, elegant appearance, while remaining light and easy to care for.
Exterior Details:
Epsom gold leather features the light, even grain characteristic of this scratch-resistant embossed leather. The finish is highlighted by tone-on-tone topstitching and a set of gold-tone metal parts, including the tourniquet clasp signed “Hermès Paris”, strap plates and padlock. The bag rests on a rigid base reinforced by studded leather straps. The handles are sturdy and comfortable in the hand, suitable for use as hand luggage or a weekend bag.
Interior Details:
The interior is spacious and unlined, true to the tradition of Hermès travel bags. It features a matching rigid leather bottom and clean internal finishes, revealing meticulous craftsmanship. The absence of interior compartments provides ample storage capacity, suitable for travel or professional use requiring the transport of bulky documents or objects.
Product Condition:
The bag is in very good overall condition for a 1982 piece. The leather retains its shine, although creases and wear marks are visible on the sides and bottom. Corners are lightly marked, handles solid, and hardware shows light oxidation, typical of antique brass. The interior is clean, with a few traces of use. The Hermes padlock is functional, with key.
Care instructions:
Epsom leather can be cared for with a soft, dry cloth. In the event of stains, light cleaning with a damp cloth is possible, avoiding abrasive products. We recommend keeping the bag in its original cover, away from humidity and direct light, and filling it lightly to maintain its shape.
