Description
Model history :
Created by Hugo Grygkar in 1957, “La Marine en Bois” pays tribute to the French navy of the 19th century, a period marked by such emblematic figures as Admirals Lalande and Roussin, whose portraits appear in the corners of the scarf. This square illustrates Hermès’ historic link with the equestrian and maritime world, in keeping with its heritage of travel-related craftsmanship.
Details :
The square features an ivory background printed with precise maritime details: a large central rudder, medallion portraits, decorative mermaids and angels, as well as names of marine ranks such as “Admiral”, “Capitaine de Frégate” or “Gendarme de Marine”. The olive green of the border contrasts elegantly with the finesse of the design, while ropes and eyelets complete the frame with subtlety.
The silk twill features a twill weave that gives the material a slight relief and a special sheen. The “Hermès Paris” signature is integrated into a printed eyelet in one corner. The hand-rolled fabric is tone-on-tone sewn, preserving the harmony of the design. The reverse side shows the quality of the printing, with shades well penetrated into the fiber.
Product condition :
The square is in good overall condition for a vintage item. The silk retains its shine and suppleness, although there are wrinkles from storage and very slight occasional darkening of the edge, typical of carefully used vintage scarves. No major snags or stains are visible.
Maintenance tips :
Preferably dry-cleaned by a specialist in delicate textiles. Keep the scarf away from direct light and moisture. Avoid excessive rubbing to preserve fibers. If necessary, smooth with gentle steam or iron on reverse with a silk position iron and a protective cloth.
