Description
Model History:
This model continues the Hermès tradition of squares dedicated to the equestrian world, a founding pillar of the House since 1837. Courbettes et Cabrioles pays tribute to the spectacular disciplines of classical dressage, and more specifically to “airs relevés” such as the courbette, in which the horse leaps on its hind legs, or the cabriole, in which it throws its hind legs into a full jump. The words “1654” engraved in the center of the scarf evoke the era of the great European equestrian academies, notably in France and Austria, when the art of riding was considered a symbol of mastery and nobility. The design style is directly inspired by early engravings from treatises by Pluvinel or La Guérinière, but is reworked here in a sophisticated, ornamental setting.
Details:
The border of this square is treated as a true ceremonial frame, borrowing from 17th-century decorative codes: acanthus scrolls, gilded friezes, symmetrical arabesques and flowery corners structure the composition with rigor. A wide, matted taupe band anchors the whole visually. At its center, a baroque cartouche frames the handwritten inscription “Courbettes et Cabrioles (1654) – Hermès Paris”, recalling the frontispieces of ancient books or the wall decorations of royal riding schools. Against a soft background of stylized clouds, periwinkle-blue silhouetted horses come to life in high-school poses, conveying both power and lightness. The visual effect is reminiscent of a monochrome engraving, playing on the contrasts between light and shadow. Latin inscriptions, discreetly scattered around the scene, reinforce the erudite dimension of the drawing. The whole evokes an ancient fresco suspended in time.
Product Condition:
This square is in impeccable condition. The silk retains its shine and supple fall, and the colors are clean and even. The hand-rolled hems are intact and even, with no signs of wear or distortion.
Care instructions:
To preserve its brilliance, we recommend storing the carré flat or slightly rolled, away from light and moisture. Cleaning should be entrusted to a professional specializing in delicate textiles. Avoid prolonged contact with cosmetics or perfumes.
