Description
Design History:
Created by Françoise Faconnet, one of the most prolific illustrators in the history of Hermès, Cerès is one of the squares with a mythological theme produced in the 1960s, a time when the House was multiplying references to ancient civilizations, nature and the decorative arts. The first edition of this motif dates back to 1967, a period marked by great graphic freedom in scarf design. The theme of fertility, harvesting and natural beauty is treated with a miniature sense of detail, in a style reminiscent of the ornamentation of ancient manuscripts or classical frescoes. As Hermès has not confirmed any recent official reissue of this design, the copies available today are mostly from the first series or from older editions that have remained faithful to the original creation.
Exterior details:
This square measures approx. 90 x 90 cm. The design is centered around a goddess-like female figure, whose body is fused with vegetal and winged elements. Colorful birds – finches, herons, larks – enliven the corners of the composition, amid stylized arabesques of foliage, wheat ears and golden bunches. The hues are subtle yet vibrant: cobalt blue meets deep violet, golden yellow is balanced by touches of burgundy and turquoise, while beiges, browns and oranges provide warmth and contrast. The artist’s signature and Hermès-Paris branding are discreetly affixed to the bottom of the scarf. The material is 100% silk twill, recognizable by its finely ribbed weave, which ensures suppleness, luminosity and impeccable hold. The edges are hand-rolled in the Hermès tradition. The silk is dense, fluid, comfortable to wear and easy to tie. There are no structural or weft defects.
Product Condition:
This scarf is in exceptional condition for a vintage piece. The colors have remained crisp and bright, with no visible fading. The silk retains its natural sheen, with no stains, discolorations or tears. The rolled edges are firm, even and perfectly preserved. This level of preservation is rare for a square from such an early model.
Care instructions:
Preferably dry-cleaned by a textile specialist. For storage, avoid prolonged exposure to light and variations in humidity. To preserve fabric quality, store flat or rolled. Avoid contact with perfume or cosmetics.
